Languages
Year 7:
All students study Indonesian and French for a semester. After exposure to both languages, students are then able to make an informed choice concerning which language they will study for all of Year 8. This choice occurs in November, Term 4.
Year 8:
Students study the language of their choice for the whole year. It is mandatory for all students to study one language for 100 hours over a continuous twelve month period. This is a requirement for the School Certificate. Students study their chosen language for five periods each cycle.
The following texts are used:
- Indonesian: Bagus Sekali
- French: Tapis Volant / Touche
In August students choose their elective subjects for Year 9 and Year 10. Importantly, if a student wishes to continue their language into Year 11 and Year 12 they MUST choose their language as a 200 hour elective.
Year 9 and Year 10:
During the School Certificate courses students have the opportunity to experience more authentic uses of the language. Students participate in excursions to restaurants, organise market days and cafes, and also have the opportunity to visit Bali, Indonesia in Year 10. This eleven day trip is organised in the April school holidays, every two years.
A thematic approach with an emphasis on speaking and listening skills is employed.
The following texts are used:
- Indonesian: Bagus Sekali 2 and 3
- French: Tapis Volant 2
Year 11 and Year 12:
Preliminary Continuers courses are offered in Year 11 for Indonesian and French. A Beginners Japanese course is also offered in Year 11.
Extension courses are also offered in Year 12 for the Higher School Certificate.
